Penrhys Pilgrims
Children at Penrhys Primary School have been working really hard to develop a new outdoor classroom. They celebrated the opening of the classroom with a special visit from welsh television characters – Sali Mali and Sam Tan.
Welsh TV presenter Caroline Cowles provided a storytelling workshop of how Sali Mali and Sam Tan help maintain the garden (through a book entitled Digon o Sioe), and with their expertise win first prize in a competition.
The project is part of the schools aim of becoming an ECO School and the project will hopefully help pupils with language and listening skills. Headteacher Chris Fisher is delighted that the children have been given a wonderful workshop in the medium of welsh and English to improve language skills. All the children are looking forward to the warm weather when they can perform in their new outdoor classroom, undertake garden projects in the school grounds and develop other learning skills about the environment.
The workshops were made possible by the support of Penrhys Partnership and their community arts and education programme at Canolfan Rhys Arts and Education Centre. The Outdoor classroom was developed with the children from the school with the support of the Groundwork Merthyr Rhondda CynonTaf – Greencare Programme and local builders Seasons Timber and Joinery.
